O MER REPACK THE JUNK

Three years ago, Brooklyn-based Israeli artist O Mer burst onto our radar with stunning single ‘Now I’m Alive’, which trod the line of visceral electronica and delicate songwriting. Since then, he’s released a string of tracks and an album, titled Everything’s My Fault, but for us nothing quite hit the same spot… until now, that is. ‘Repack The Junk’ once again subverts expectations. The new song opens with alt-J-esque guitars which trill into hearty bass beats and vocals which explore RnB sensuality and Middle Eastern octave scaling. This bold soundscape sets the tone for O Mer’s intentions here, as the songwriter and producer shares: “This song condenses all my feelings about the current culture (be it politics, social media or even the music world) into a conversation between an optimistic and pessimistic version of myself. In the song, and in real life too, I oscillate between sarcasm and earnestness; hopeful and cynical; and with any luck I'll land somewhere in between.” This dichotomy surely speaks to many people existing in today’s current culture; we can feel ourselves torn between senseless apathy and the need to step up and make our mark. As O Mer suggests, all can we can hope for is to land somewhere in between. - Hannah Thacker
